In the 2020-21 FCS season Ward passed for 2,260 yards and FCS-leading 24 touchdowns en route to winning the Jerry Rice award given to the most outstanding freshman. Following up on his stellar freshman season, Ward passed for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns as a sophomore and was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
